finding your twist

The majority of people will only remember three messages from your presentation. OliverTwist will work with you to determine what three messages will have the most impact on your audience.

OliverTwist will help you ascertain a unique point of difference (your twist) which is relevant to your audience and differentiates you from other presenters. We will then work with you to develop three broad messages which support and illustrate your twist. These three messages will serve as the starting point for your presentation.

presentation tips

Having a well-structured, high impact presentation is only half the battle — the delivery of your presentation is equally important. The following tips will help ensure your presentation is a success.

rehearse, rehearse, rehearse

Rehearsing can make the difference between an average and a good presentation. You should plan to rehearse your presentation out loud at least four times.

Make sure that at least one of your rehearsals is in front of an audience — commission your family, friends, partners, co-workers or children — and ask them to be honest about what may be going wrong.

If you have to give a presentation in a short period of time then try to practice your presentation against the clock.

speak with conviction

Show your audience you are passionate about and believe in what you are presenting. If you don't demonstrate you believe in what you are saying, your audience won't believe in it either.

Strong start to OliverTwist presentationstart strongly

The importance of a strong start cannot be overstressed — first impressions count. How you start your presentation sets the scene for what is to come and either grabs the attention of your audience or quickly sends them to sleep. Don't ramble on about superfluous background information or your personal/professional history — appeal to your audience's self-interest.

To avoid opening jitters, practice the opening of your presentation again, again and again. This way, when the time comes to start the actual presentation, it will seem much easier. And once you've got through the first few minutes well, the rest of your presentation will flow easily.

never read your speech

Presenters who read their speeches (or read-verbatim the contents of their slides) are one of the biggest turn-offs for audiences. By all means use notes to prompt you but always ensure that you are talking to your audience and not at them.

connect with your audience

Build rapport and connect with your audience by smiling, maintaining good eye contact and using appropriate body language.

Look at your audience and react to what you see. Try looking at individuals rather than scanning the group. Never turn your back on your audience. If you need to view your slides, glance down at the computer screen briefly — not the screen behind you .

Get closer to your audience by moving away from barrier of the lecturn. Gesture with your hands to reinforce important messages and direct attention to important features of your slides.

keep it short and sweet

You will never be criticised for giving too short a presentation. People have short attention spans, especially when passively sitting and listening to a speaker. Always finish your presentation in less than the allotted time. It is better to leave your audience wanting more than feeling they have had more than enough.

anticipate questions

Consider in advance what questions you will be asked. Think of the worst possible questions, and rehearse your answers. If you're prepared for the worst, the other questions will seem easy. Typical questions relate to sources for your data, how you calculated numerical information, comparisons with alternatives, costs, and delivery times. If you are familiar with this information, things should flow smoothly.

use the ‘b’ key

If you need to digress or move off the topic presented on a slide, you can press the ‘b’ key during your PowerPoint presentation and the screen will go blank. With the screen blank, all the attention can now be placed on you. When you are ready to move on, just press the ‘b’ key again and your current slide will reappear.
